About Booth Art Gallery
Booth Art Gallery was founded out of a deep and lifelong passion for Southwestern art and the artists who give this region its soul. From the sweeping landscapes of the Texas Hill Country to the bold, vibrant culture of San Antonio's Southtown, the art of South Texas has always told stories worth preserving — and sharing.
When the estate of Gilbert Duran came to auction, it was not simply an opportunity. It was a calling. Having followed Duran's work for years and witnessed firsthand the way his paintings stopped people in their tracks — the colors, the energy, the unmistakable "puro San Antonio" spirit — acquiring a significant portion of his collection felt like both an honor and a responsibility.
About Gilbert Duran (1947–2023)
Gilbert Duran stands as one of San Antonio's most celebrated and beloved artists. First gaining recognition for his masterful watercolor renditions of South Texas wildlife and classic Texas ranch scenes, Duran later embraced vivid oil paintings rooted in South Texas and Latin culture — bold, expressive works that captured the heart of a region like no one else could.
His most iconic work, Frida Margarita — depicting Frida Kahlo holding a cocktail — became a cultural landmark, widely copied and displayed throughout Texas and beyond. Working from his Southtown studio, Duran Arte, he produced a prolific body of original paintings and sculptures, including commissioned works for some of San Antonio's most beloved institutions.
Duran's work has been exhibited at the Smithsonian Museo Alameda and is held in notable private collections, including that of Guadalupe Rivera Marín, daughter of Diego Rivera. He was not just an artist — he was a keeper of South Texas identity.
The Collection
The 16 original works now available through Booth Art Gallery represent some of the finest examples of Duran's range — from intimate underdrawings and wildlife studies to large-scale oil paintings bursting with color and cultural pride. Each piece comes with full provenance documentation from the original estate auction.
This is a rare opportunity. Once these pieces find their homes, they will not come to market again.
How to Purchase
All pieces are available for viewing in San Antonio by appointment. Shipping can be arranged for collectors outside the area. To inquire about any work in the collection, please contact us at sales@boothartgallery.com — we would love to help you find the right piece.
